Britain rejoiced on 9 July 1947 when King George VI announced the engagement of his elder daughter Princess Elizabeth to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. The fairy-tale wedding on 20 Nov proved to be a splendid occasion that lifted the spirits of a weary nation still ravaged by the austerity left by war.
The obverse design by Philip Nathan depicts the Queen and Prince Philip in magniicent profile portraits that are both dignified and reflective. The reverse, designed by Leslie Durbin and modelled by Philip Nathan, features side by side the Arms of the royal couple.
