The grizzly bear was originally classified as ursus horribilis (terrifying bear) for its fearsome character. The grizzly is Canada's second largest carnivore, with no natural predators.
The large size of the coin allows the artwork of Pierre Leduc to really stand out. The reverse of this coin features an adult grizzly standing on a rocky outcropping. The bear is roaring with full force, letting all creatures know who is in charge.
