The magnificent city of Macau is where Eastern and Western traditions and histories have merged into one for more than four centuries. Drawing from this interesting blend of cultures and historical values, the Monetary Authority of Macau proudly presents the Macau Lunar Coin Collection (2008 – 2019), which is exclusively minted and marketed by The Singapore Mint. Each of the 12 Macau Lunar Coins actively reflects the unique blend of Macau’s Chinese heritage and Portuguese roots. The obverse side of each coin features an animal of the Chinese zodiac series while the reverse side features one of the 12 selected sites in the Historic Centre of Macau which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Macau Lunar Rooster Coin, the tenth in this collection is issued in conjunction with the arrival of the 2017 Year of the Rooster.

Reflecting the vigilant yet vibrant nature of the Rooster, people born in the Year of the Rooster are thought to be loyal and diligent individuals valuing both social interactions and candor. As the 10th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the rooster is the epitome of punctuality and fidelity. According to classic literature, the Rooster embodies five virtues namely, civil culture; martial qualities; courage; benevolence and trustworthiness. The rooster’s comb resembles the hat of a scholar, thus embodying its martial and civil qualities; the rooster’s calcar symbolises its fighting strength and courage; its sharing of food portrays its benevolence; and its night-watching characteristics displays its trustworthiness.

The obverse side of the coin features the outline of a magnificent rooster, accompanied by blooms of rosy Celosia cristata. The Celosia cristata, or cockscomb as is commonly called, is a hardy flower that grows equally well both indoors and outdoors, displaying its resilient and resourceful nature, just as how the people born in the Year of the Rooster are said to be like. The name cockscomb was given to this flower due to its similarity to the comb of the rooster. The rooster’s comb or crown, has the Chinese words ‘雞冠 ‘whereby its ‘冠’ has the same pronunciation as the ‘官’ from the word, ‘Official’. Therefore, the arrangement of a rooster with cockscomb flowers symbolises career progressions due to the Chinese words, “官上加官”, literally meaning to add another ‘crown’ on top of a ‘crown’.

The reverse side features the St. Dominic’s Church. Located within the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church is one of Macau’s oldest historical structures, built in 1587. It was at this very place that the first Portuguese newspaper was published on Chinese soil. Today, its bell tower, refurbished into the Treasure of Sacred Art Museum, hosts a collection of around 300 artefacts. A church of both Portuguese and Spanish influences, its unmistakable Baroque style yellow and green façade stands prominently in the heart of Macau’s famous St Dominic’s Square.
