This 1 oz coin is introduced into the Krugerrand family for the first time in 2018; more than half a century after the striking of the first Krugerrand which embodies the history of the discovery of gold in South Africa and has also become the symbol of South Africa’s proud numismatic heritage.
The reverse on the 2018 1oz Krugerrand is common to all denominations and metals in the Krugerrand series. It features South Africa’s national animal, the springbok, as designed and engraved by sculptor Coert Steynberg, the year ‘2018’, with the word “Krugerrand” above the animal and the gold content below.
The very first Krugerrand was a 1oz gold coin. This classic size has been central to the Krugerrand collection for over 50 years. The common obverse features the effigy of Paul Kruger, South Africa’s president at the time that the original Krugerrand was first introduced.
