Born in Brixton, South London in 1947, David Bowie began life as David Robert Jones. By the time he was 19 he had taken on his iconic name and was taking the first steps in one of the most innovative and influential careers in the history of sound and vision.
This coin is the third release in a series celebrating British Music Legends. Acclaimed artist Jody Clark, who also created the most recent coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, looked to the period when Bowie lived and recorded in Berlin in the late 1970s for inspiration. Set against the lightning bolt motif from the Aladdin Sane era, the portrait shows Bowie shedding his various personae to reinvent himself, as he would continue to do for decades to come.
Available as a kilo, two-ounce, one ounce and quarter-ounce gold Proof coin, two-ounce and half-ounce silver Proof coin, a one ounce colour-printed silver Proof coin, and a standard Brilliant Uncirculated edition, it is a fitting tribute to one of British music’s most enduring icons.
