More about Guan Yu:

The Chinese warrior god Guan Yu, also known as Duke, Lord or Emperor Guan, is based on a historical figure who served the warlord Liu Bei during the period known as the Three Kingdoms era around 200CE. A brave and loyal general, he was worshipped as a god of war after his death and praised as a supporter of peace, and promoter of morality and righteousness. A historical novel titled Romance of the Three Kingdoms cultivated Guan Yu’s position as one of the most popular and influential deities of Imperial China.

Guan Yu is traditionally portrayed with his signature weapon known as the Green Dragon Crescent Blade.

According to the famous historical novel, this heavy iron blade was forged by a renowned blacksmith under the light of the full moon. When the 18-kilo weapon was close to completion, 1,780 drops of blood fell from the sky. This was believed to be blood from a green dragon, a divine being representing the power of the East as a symbol of health, prosperity and harmony.

Revered across multiple religions including Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, Guan Yu is worshipped as a god of health, family, harmony, justice, prosperity luck and fertility.

Features of the Design:

  • The coin’s reverse features a representation of Guan Yu yielding his legendary Green Dragon Crescent Blade among stylised clouds and a depiction of a dragon grasping a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment. The Green Dragon Crescent Blade is coloured purple and gold. The inscription ‘关羽’ which is the Chinese name for Guan Yu, also appears in the design.
  • The Ian Rank-Broadley of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, the weight and fineness, and the 2020 year-date are shown on the coin’s obverse.
  • No more than 388 of the Guan Yu 2020 5oz Silver Coloured Antiqued Coin will be released.
  • This coin has been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. As a result of this treatment, the appearance of each coin may vary.
  • The coin also features a coloured finish on the Green Dragon Crescent Blade.
  • Each coin is housed in a classic display case within an illustrated shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
