The Faberge Egg phenomenon started in 1885, when the Empress Maria Fedorovna was given one by her husband, Tsar Alexander III. This egg has been referred to as the Hen Egg and was designed with gold featuring a shell with white, opaque enamel. The egg could be opened to reveal a surprise, which could in turn be opened to reveal another. Since then, various Faberge eggs have been created as royal gifts.

The obverse of the coin displays an image of a Faberge egg as well as an image of Queen Elizabeth II. Only 9,999 sets were produced.
