The Royal Mint kicks off the Shengxi`o Collection, its new Chinese Lunar series, with the British 2014 Lunar Horse 1 oz silver bullion coin. This is the first British legal tender coin from the Royal Mint to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Struck from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, these coins feature the design of British artist Wuon-Gean Ho.
A former veterinary surgeon and an accomplished artist, her expert knowledge of equine anatomy helped her bring the coin's vibrant image to life.
Wuon-Gean Ho's reverse design features a horse majestically galloping in the hills of Oxfordshire, with the giant prehistoric Uffington Horse carved into the hillside behind it. The inscription, YEAR OF THE HORSE 2014, as well as the weight and purity, arch over the picturesque scene. The Chinese character for Horse appears to the right, above the horse's windswept tail.
The obverse is graced by the standard Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with the face value of 2 POUNDS placed along the bottom rim beneath the truncation.
This is the first coin in the Royal Mint's Shengxi`o Collection, which honors the Chinese Lunar calendar. 2014 is the Year of the Horse, which occurs every 12 years. These 1 oz silver coins have a maximum mintage of just 300,000, so they're unlikely to stay in stock for long!
