On 2 June 1953, Queen Elizabeth II arrived at Westminster Abbey to be crowned before the nation. Outside the entrance, ten heraldic creatures formed a guard of honour in a striking illustration of the royal line of descent. Taking its place amongst them was the Griffin of Edward III.

Part lion, part eagle, the griffin combines the courage of the king of beasts and the air, to create a creature more powerful than either. In heraldry the griffin is a sentinel, often standing guard on roofs and doors, and is a guardian of sacred objects and a talisman against evil. First used as a royal beast by Edward III, the epitome of medieval kingship, the griffin’s coronation shield depicts Windsor Castle, where Edward founded the Order of the Garter in 1348.

Recast on a coin, the griffin completes the line-up of The Queen’s Beasts in the collection – all ten beasts stand together at last. Available in a range of limited-edition gold and silver Proof editions, as well as a Brilliant Uncirculated edition, designer Jody Clark tempers the fantastical with realism to convey the griffin’s majesty.
