The silver panda is one of the most eagerly sought after bullion release each year. The Chinese mint produces Panda coins annually in silver and gold. The gold coins were first released in 1982 while the silver panda coins were originally availabe beginning in 1983 in proof format, the normal bullion strike we now see started in 1988. Both the gold and silver panda coins are so highly sought after because of its yearly changing design, this has created a highly collectible bullion following.

The rarest and most highly prized silver pandas are from 1983, 1984 and 1985, this is because these first three releases were in a proof striking and had a tiny mintage of only 10,000 coins each year. After these three years the Chinese mint did not distribute any panda coins for 1986. Since 1987 coins have been minted yearly and have appreciated significantly every year. The only year which silver panda designs remained the same was in 2001 and 2002.
Currently three different Chinese mint strike the Silver Panda coin. The three mints are based in Shanghai, Shenzhen GuoBao and Shenyang. It is interesting to note that the three Chinese Silver Panda mints do not incorporate mintmarks on their product so the only way to distinguish which mint struck which coins is attempting to find minor differences in design or dye strikes on the coin, font sizes or temple design. These interesting mint variations and unique yearly designs have made the Chinese Silver Panda coins highly collected and sought after by investors.
