One of the most popular gold coins to be produced by the Mexican Mint is the Libertad, a successor to the Centenario. The Libertad today is considered Mexico’s primary sovereign coin and is popular both within and outside the country.
The Gold Libertad was first introduced in the early 1980s. The original design was very similar to the Centenario, but by the year 2000 the Mexican Mint altered the illustration of the coat of arms. Throughout its history production of the Libertad has been discontinued twice, and since 2002 the coins have been struck in weights of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1 oz, ½ oz and ¼ oz. The newest edition is the 2015 Libertad, which is sold in a condition which is Brilliant Uncirculated. The reverse side of these coins depict Mexico’s coat of arms, while the obverse side depicts an engraving of the Angel of Independence.
