The African Wildlife series is a silver coin collection which commemorates majestic animals found in Africa. Many of these coins are produced by the Bavarian State Mint in Germany, and were first introduced in 1999. The four countries featured in this collection so far are Burundi, Somalia, Rwanda and The Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Burundi series of silver coins were released in 2015, and feature a pair of forward facing African lions. Only 50,000 have been minted and each has a face value of approximately 5,000 Francs. All the Burundi Lion coins are struck in .999 fine silver.
The Rwanda Wildlife Series was first introduced in 2009, and features a new animal every production year. Animals featured thus far include the African Buffalo (2015), the Impala (2014), the Cheetah (2013), the Rhino (2012), the Zebra (2011), the Lion (2010) and the Elephant (2009). These coins have a denomination of 100 shillings and are produced at BH Mayer’s Mint in Munich.
The Somalian Elephant coins appear as standard bullion, and weigh one troy ounce. The proof and finish are stunning, and the reverse of each coin shows a unique image of the African elephant. If you want to collect the entire run, you should know that the Somalian Elephant coins began as the Zambian Elephant Series from 1999 to 2003. The most common coins in this series are the ones in brilliant uncirculated condition while the rarer ones come as colorized coins, gilded coins, and high-relief proofs.
These coins were produced by the Scottsdale Mint in collaboration with the government of the Republic of the Congo. These distinct silver coins carry a face value of 5,000 francs. These coins are made from .999 fine silver and are highly sought after by collectors.
