Today, it is estimated that there are only 700 Mountain Gorillas, Gorilla beringei beringei, remaining on Earth. These live at altitudes of up to 4,000 m (13,100 ft) in the mountains of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. As humans have moved into the Gorillas territory, they have been pushed further up into the mountains for long periods, forcing them to endure deadly conditions.
In the forests, Gorillas will find shelter and food such as roots, fruit, and tree bark. They are usually found on the ground in communities of up to 30 individuals. These troops are highly organized under a dominant adult male, known as a Silverback, who will organise activities such as eating and moving about the home range. When challenged, the Silverback will give an impressive display of physical power, standing upright, throwing things, charging, and pounding his huge chest. Despite these displays, Gorillas are generally nonaggressive unless they are disturbed.
At birth a Mountain Gorilla will only weigh around 2 kg (4.5 lb). From an early age these infants will ride on their mothers back. Over the past century, Mountain Gorillas have endured decades of war, hunting, habitat destruction and disease. This bleak outlook has brightened in recent years due to conservation efforts which have seen an encouraging increase in population numbers.
