Krugerrands are the world's most widely held gold coins. They are alloyed with a small amount of copper making them 22 carat coin as they were originally designed to be handled as currency.
The Krugerrand was the first gold coin to be donominated in ounces of pure gold, with the bullion Krugerrand being linked to the daily gold price. As legal tender coins, Krugerrands are made at the South African Mint Company and need not be assayed or melted down upon resale - unlike many cast and minted gold bars.
The Krugerrand concept has since been replicated by many foreign countries but it is still one of the best-established gold coin brand names in the world.
