Besides being an immensely important form of nourishment for humans and animals, the egg is considered a symbol of fertility, rebirth and resurrection in many cultures. In various mythologies the egg is the origin of divinities or even of the whole universe.
In many cultures, eggs were also popular as burial gifts. Depending on the circumstance, they were meant as a food accompaniment or as a symbol of resurrection.
