James Bond is the world-famous, quintessentially British spy who has been thrilling audiences for decades. Now, more than 50 years later, 007 is as popular as ever and The Royal Mint is celebrating the secret agent with an official United Kingdom coin series.

The second coin in the collection explores the technology that has characterised the films, from exploding pens to ejector seats. Featuring ‘Wet Nellie’, the submarine car that appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me, the latest coin is a great way to continue the collection, or stands alone as a unique Bond collectable.

The coin is available in several editions, from a Brilliant Uncirculated edition to precious metal coins struck in strictly limited numbers. Each is presented in stylish and sophisticated packaging.

The Design and the Designers

The coin’s reverse design was a collaboration between Christian Davies and Matt Dent, partners at graphic design agency Bison Bison. This is Christian’s first coin design project, but Matt has created several coin designs for The Royal Mint, including the 50p coincelebrating 50 years of the World Wildlife Fund and the £2 coin that honoured Charles Dickens in 2012. He also created the picture-puzzle style Royal Arms design that featured on the circulating coins from the 1p to the £1 introduced in 2008.

“There is so much that you could draw on – different films, villains, technology. We decided very early on to focus on iconic imagery from the Bond films; the elements people would recognise instantly.”

Matt Dent

“Giving a sense that the car was underwater whilst keeping the design simple was tricky, so including telltale bubbles and setting the car at a slight angle waskey.”

Christian Davies
